Well, 5 years did pass between the release of the two codes. Then, even the steel industry will have to admit that they are selling more paper than steel, and that trees, paper, wood, timber truly are the materials of the future. They are hoping that within a few years the income from the publishing and advice business will outweigh the loss in steel sales. Their advice center will truly become a profit center as fewer and fewer engineers can keep up with the rate of change, and all steel designes will just be forwarded directly to them to complete, to meet the code of the moment. 2.) Then, the more frequently they publish, and the more complicated they make the design process, the more money they make by printing manuals and design guide books. They are going to start promoting this vast material savings as their effort toward the green revolution. They will claim that less and less steel is being used becuase of their codes. Think of all natural resources being saved with each new edition. 1.) The more time engineers spend reading the new editions of the manual, to try to find all the insignificant changes, the less time they will have to actually design a steel building. It’s a two pronged effort on AISC’s part.
